## Summary
About 114 tests skipped on CI because they needed the official client files (`tiledata.mul`, map and multi files). They gave CI no signal, and locally they ran against whichever client a developer had installed. The test hosts now build their own world instead, so every test runs on CI and runs the same on every machine. CI simulation: Server.Tests 837 passed, UOContent.Tests 1131 passed, **0 skipped**.
- **Generated tile data.** The fixtures write a pre-HS `tiledata.mul` from a small invented tile kit (`Server.Tests/Terrain/TestTiles`) and load it through the real `TileData.Load()`. The test hosts no longer read any client directory (`MODERNUO_CLIENT_PATH`, `MODERNUO_TEST_DATA_DIR` and `C:\Ultima Online Classic` are gone from test code). The file is written to `SyntheticData` in each test project's output, overwritten every run and removed by `dotnet clean`.
- **Injected terrain.** `TestTerrain` stamps land and statics into Felucca and Trammel, which share one terrain. Writes after startup must go in a `TestTerrain.Scope()`, which puts back every block it touched and keeps the step cache fresh.
- **Prefab scenes.** Seven named scenes (town, causeway, sewer walkway, coastline, deep sea, map-edge sea, an upstairs room with an L-shaped counter) replace the Britain coordinates the pathing, AI and fishing tests relied on. Each scene-based test asserts its scene is present first, so a missing scene fails instead of passing on flat ground. Stamping all seven takes 3-5 ms.
- **Multi footprints.** Contrived footprints for the three multi IDs content looks up (0x74, 0x7A, 0x0) are seeded through a new internal `MultiData.SetComponents`.
- **Fingerprint.** `StepCacheFile.HashTileDataFile` is extracted so a test can show that a one-flag change to the file changes the fingerprint, while runtime table mutation does not.
### Engine changes
- `TileMatrix.GetLandBlock`/`GetStaticBlock`: on a map without its files, return the block injected with `SetLandBlock`/`SetStaticBlock`, or the default when nothing was injected. Maps with files take the same path as before.
- `MultiData.SetComponents` (internal): registers a footprint without multi files.
### Test changes worth a look
- Values that were properties of real Britain terrain (probes at Z 10, a pinned plain walk mask of 0xC1) are re-pinned to the synthetic plain (Z 0, 0xFF).
- No tests were deleted. The multi walkability and boat-deck tests assert movement behaviour over a footprint, not what a real multi looks like, so they run on the contrived footprints.
- Maps 0 and 1 keep file indexes 0 and 1, and every stamp writes both, rather than sharing one file index. On a map without files the getters never consult the shared-file cache, and its patch bits would hide one facet's injection from the other.
## Test plan
- [x] `dotnet test -p:SolutionDir=... --filter "Category!=Manual"` with the client env vars pointed at an empty directory: 837 + 1131 passed, 0 skipped, 0 failed
- [x] Mutation check: removing the step-cache clear from `TestTerrain` makes the stale-cache tests fail
- [x] CI green on all platforms
## Summary
Many tests proved a specific change when it landed but don't need to run on every CI build forever. This removes **202 test methods and 9 files: 313 test cases, 2,247 → 1,934**. UOContent.Tests drops from about 14s to about 5s locally.
Removed:
- **Tautologies.** Asserting a constant, a constructor readback or a trivial getter, or testing BCL behavior.
- **Exact duplicates** of a surviving test on the same code path.
- **Obsolete regressions** whose failure can no longer be expressed.
- **Game-content values** shard owners customize (era drop rates, loot and skill tables, single-creature tuning). Each customization would otherwise force a test fix.
## How it was decided
1. Every test was classified, with a reason, by a per-shard sweep over all 287 test files.
2. Each proposed deletion was then checked by a second, adversarial reviewer against the surviving tests and the production code.
3. Anything that was the only coverage of a separate code path was **kept**, even where it looked like a duplicate. Examples: the unsigned `SpanReader`/`SpanWriter` methods, the at-location versus bounds enumerators, null-map enumerables, the security filters, archive-journal state transitions. About 130 proposed deletions were rejected this way.
Whole files removed:
- `FishingTests`, apart from 3 tests: the map-edge scan, serpent cleanup, and SOS chest consumption. The SOS test now stops at the first chest instead of measuring a catch rate. The multi-million-cast rate simulations are gone.
- `LordOaksTests` and `MeerEnragedTests` (single-creature tests).
- `AutoArchiveHelperTests`, `JsonDiscoverableTypeAttributeTests`, `DecimalSerializationTests` and `EnumConversionTests` (tautologies, or tests of their own local helpers).
- `NetworkStatsTests`.
- `MigratedDataLoadTests` (a subset of `AllSpawnFilesLoadTests`).
- `SpawnerFixtureCapture`: a capture tool, not a test, and its `version == 12` assert can no longer pass. The `.bin` fixtures it produced stay.
## Tests
- Server.Tests: 811 pass.
- UOContent.Tests: 1,123 pass.
A follow-up PR, stacked on this one, fixes how the remaining tests behave: shared state, CI-vacuous tests, harness duplication.
## Summary
After #2670, `BaseCreature` stores one master. Callers still reached it through three differently gated names plus hand-rolled combinations of the `Controlled`/`Summoned` flags. Each gate is now one named view:
| Member | Definition | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| `Master` | the reference; its setter does the follower bookkeeping; serialized as before | whoever the creature answers to |
| `ControlMaster` | `Controlled ? Master : null` | the owner |
| `SummonMaster` | `Summoned ? Master : null` | the summoner |
| `GetMaster()` | `ControlMaster ?? SummonMaster` | who answers for the creature |
`ControlMaster` and `SummonMaster` stay settable so custom code keeps compiling: both setters assign `Master`. There is no guard, so a write through either one can read back as null until the matching flag is set.
An enraged creature is the one shape with a master and neither flag. It keeps its meer through `Master`, while `GetMaster()` stays null, so the meer never answers for it (notoriety, kill credit).
Readers move onto the view they mean:
- "Owner or summoner" pairs and `ControlMaster ?? SummonMaster` collapse into `GetMaster()`: pack instinct, familiars, golem, house access, mounts, pack horse, Solen friendship, spell target and guild checks, and the `[` pet command.
- Checks such as `Controlled && ControlMaster == from` drop the flag the view already applies. Checks that don't reduce keep it: `Controlled && ControlMaster != from`, a possibly-null `from`, and `MageAI.CanDispel`'s `Summoned &&`.
**No behavior change, save format unchanged** (the schema generator produces no diff). Edge cases for custom code and shard operators:
- `SummonMaster = x` on a plain pet now replaces its owner (#2670 made that a no-op), and `ControlMaster = null` on an uncontrolled summon now clears its caster (it did nothing before).
- `SpellHelper.GetGuildFor` no longer falls back to an enraged creature's meer. Meer mages have no guild.
## Docs
- `dev-docs/content-patterns.md` § Masters: which view answers which question, how to set a master, and which flag checks are redundant.
- `dev-docs/runuo-migration-docs/09-items-mobiles-creatures.md` § Masters: RunUO's two-field reads mapped onto the views, plus the gotcha for creatures that set `SummonMaster` without `Summoned` (the write compiles, the read now returns null; use `Master`).
- The `modernuo-content-patterns` and `migrate-items-mobiles` skills point at both.
## Test plan
- [x] `MasterViewsTests`: all four views across wild, pet, controlled summon, uncontrolled summon and enraged shapes; reassigning `Master` moves follower slots; `SetControlMaster(null)` keeps an uncontrolled summon's caster; deleting a summon returns the caster's slots
- [x] Serialization tests updated to the new views (round-trip, legacy v22, v23 migration)
- [x] UOContent.Tests (1178 passed, 2 skipped) and Server.Tests (907) green
#2132 let a player's energy vortex or blade spirits in pre-AOS Felucca target their own caster, gated by `FollowsAcquireRules`. #2232's AI overhaul moved the summon checks into `IsInvalidSummonTarget`, which excluded the caster in every era, and dropped the gate. Since then `FollowsAcquireRules` has had no readers and summons have never turned on their caster.
## Changes
- `IsInvalidSummonTarget` reads `FollowsAcquireRules` again. A summon that follows the acquire rules spares its caster and anyone the caster's harmful spells would spare. The vortex and blade spirits don't follow them in pre-AOS Felucca when a player summoned them.
- The animated-dead restrictions (no players, no other animated dead, no pets) apply to every animated summon regardless of that setting.
- `AcquireNewFocusMob` sets a berserk summon's caster aside and targets them only when nobody else is available. #2132 meant to prefer others, but its check only worked when the caster was scanned before the other candidates, and the vortex's Int-plus-Magery ranking usually puts a nearby caster first.
- The AOS summon-target check no longer dereferences a missing `SummonMaster`. A summon whose caster was deleted before a reload comes back without one.
Controlled summons are unaffected: since #2665 they target through `HandleControlled` and never reach this scan.
## Tests
`SummonAcquireRulesTests` has 6 cases, skipped without client map data. Pre-AOS Felucca: a vortex and blade spirits each target their caster when the caster is alone, and a vortex targets a bystander even when the caster ranks higher. Pre-AOS Trammel and AOS Felucca: the caster is still spared. An AOS scan next to a summon with no master doesn't throw. `UOContent.Tests`: 1148 passed, 2 skipped, 0 failed on Windows.
